Happy Holidays! Now is a great time to think about creative gifts, if you or anyone you know is looking to add art supplies to your wish-list, read on for inspiration! Please note that this post contains Amazon Affiliate links, meaning I may make a small commission when you order through the links provided on Amazon. Why write an affiliate blog? I'm always giving out art supply recommendations to my clients and students, so now I'm centralizing it here on my blog for mutual benefit.
These Items are not in a particular order. Most of these I've used myself but I always love to know how you like the art supplies. And remember, even if it doesn't work out you can generally easily return or exchange through Amazon.
Prismacolor Pencils a favorite for children and adults, these are professional illustrating pencils that are waxy and highly pigmented, so they blend easily and look crisp yet smooth. You can combine them with markers, watercolor, or use them on their own. There are also more economical smaller options and even a Scholar/Student quality option.
Accessories like a high quality sharpener and blending pencils bring the experience to the next level.
Next are some basic fine tip black markers for details on illustrations. Sometimes pencils just don't add the definition, I like sharpies, but there are plenty of other options. Or if you like this type of marker, they also come in a variety of colors.
Next is one of my all time favorites because of the super vivid colors. They are better than any watercolor pencils I've used, so if you want to leave a memorable impression try these Inktense Pencils. They come in a variety of assortments.
For anything watery or paint, you'll want some brushes. I absolutely love these Silver Brush ones, but there are many alternative if you're getting brushes for a child or otherwise want something more economical. I will say though, that quality brushes do make a big difference if you're willing to clean them after each use.
If you want quality graphite sketch pencils, these ones are great. Remember to also have an eraser around. The sharpener I mentioned above works well with these too.
Next is a sketchbook. A sketchbook can be very personal, but as far as a basic sketchbook goes, this is one I like and use often in both the small and larger size.
Another fun choice is acrylic paint pens. There are a lot of choices out there, so get whatever is best for you. Keep in mind you generally have to shake and pump these to use them, especially important for the first use. Here is one option for a dual sided set that includes a metallic gold and silver along with other colors.
If you want oil paint without a messy cleanup, I recommend water mixable oil paints. There are a few brands that make these, one that is good even for professional use is Windsor and Newton. The benefit is that I you can clean up your brushes with soap and water and skip the paint thinner.
For acrylic paint, if you want an economical version with a lot of variety and a few extras (brushes, pallette knife, and sponge) I recommend this set This especially great for kids, but I use it myself and like it too.
There are also watercolors, but I tend to find that the Inktense Pencils above that I mentioned work well for most watercolor purposes. Still if you want a watercolor set, consider this one.
To go along with your paint, you may want palette paper for easy cleanup, as well as some kind of paint surface such as mixed media paper.
